I thought about writing a long, technical explanation about the Heartbleed scare, with insight and wit and panache. Then I saw this xckd comic today, and decided it said far more than I could with twice as many words.
Here's the main thing to remember with this or any Internet scare: don't panic. The world is not ending. Yes, there are legitimate concerns about the nature of online security, and yes, you should do your due diligence to protect yourself and any clients you may have. But nothing is foolproof, and it's best we stop looking for the perfect solution (which doesn't exist) and start treating these issues as the realities we live with. We make choices every day about convenience versus security, and sometimes that means we live with certain risks.
Throwing the baby out with the bathwater never made things better.
