Returning to Fullerton at the end of the Oxford term was a relief to Richard Morland. After several days of rest, though, he determined on attempting a different challenge.
"Come James, you can not stay cooped up today, at the very start of Whitsun-tide!" he admonished his unusually solemn elder brother, and fairly dragged him from the house to join in whatever fun could be found.
It took a whole day's persuasion and diversion to coax a smile from said brother, but the effort was duly rewarded by seeing how happy this change made the rest of their family party.
Title from Chapter 16 of Northanger Abbey: "When properly to relax is the trial of judgment...."
