"It is the first Rogation I led since taking orders, and though I soon learned, began it with no clear idea what was expected of me, nor what to expect, despite observing it in years past. I do not mean to turn such a Puritan as to forswear all travels or amusements, but there is much to be said for staying still; or rather, for abiding in the place God has ordained."
Eleanor would have read Catherine's influence between Henry's lines even without his admitting to their exchange of letters on the subject. But it was very good to read the proof that her brother had learned to court the lady's opinion in equal measure to shaping it, and furthermore to receive any word after weeks of absence. Alas, it would be all she had for perhaps weeks more, as Henry admitted he only dared send the note out of a belief that the bustle of their late arrival would disguise it from their father's notice.
She could not help comparing the difference between her own parent and her friend's, those who so generously courted their daughter's happiness. Eleanor did not envy, but was pained all the same.
Title from Chapter 28 of Northanger Abbey: "I will trust to your own kindness of heart when I am at a distance from you."
