Disney is releasing a major motion picture version of Into the Woods this Christmas. There's been a lot of buzz in the theatre world about this movie, including some controversy regarding changes made to the story (see this Playbill article for the details). This week the first teaser trailer was released, and while I've followed the news about this film, it certainly surprised me in a big way.
Can you tell the biggest change? Here's a commercial for the original Broadway show for comparison.
That's right: Into the Woods is a musical. Evidently the people making trailers for Disney forgot that part when they put together the ad. I knew Sondheim spoke about cutting a song from the film, but stripping a musical of all singing sounds a bit extreme. I know, I know, they probably will sing in the actual movie, but it's odd that they'd promote the film as coming from the director of Chicago, and feature Meryl Streep (she of Mamma Mia fame) so prominently, all without a single note sung.
My final questions about the trailer: just how young is this Jack, and why does he look like one of the lost boys from Peter Pan?
