The results are finally in, and the 2017 INSPY award winners are now live. In a year that had several sequels among the nominees, one stood out for those us judging the Speculative Fiction category: none other than the followup to last year's winner.
The Shattered Vigil
by Patrick W. Carr
published by Bethany House (November 1, 2016)
This novel solidified my fandom for this series, one that continues to surprise me with its ideas and depth. I'm now very eager to read the third book, The Wounded Shadow, set to be released next April 3. Look for a review of The Shattered Vigil here on my blog soon.
Here's what we the judges thought about this second installment in the Darkwater Saga:
The Shattered Vigil by Patrick Carr is a sequel that dares to change the script rather than repeat its predecessor’s formula, shining the lens deeper on the characters already established while introducing new ones who quickly became old friends. Carr returns to a world at once different, yet like our own. His command of multiple characters and settings brought together the genres of fantasy and mystery in a satisfying journey. But it is the spiritual journeys of the characters that continue to shine: a hero who doesn’t like to go to war and instead seeks peace, enjoying a rich relationship with God that brings him into conflict with his own destiny.
