Last night was the best Oscars performance in a long time. It started fun, had a few hitches here and there, but delivered with great presenters and speeches. The winners came as no surprise; there were no upsets, no underdogs, and no breakout moments.
Still, for all the talk of the Oscars not being diverse this year, there were a huge number of women taking home awards, one of the best speeches of the night came from a Polish winner (the first time I ever got interested in the Foreign Film section), and the top dog of the night (Birdman) was directed and co-written by a man of Mexican heritage.
My one prediction I made ahead of the telecast, that Visual Effects would go either to Instellar or Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, turned out to be correct with a very deserved win for the former. Other predictions made in the moment were largely on par. Maybe next year I'll be brave enough to actually post a full ballot ahead of time, which would mean I'd actually seen most of the films. Or maybe I'll just do like host Neil Patrick Harris (who lifted the show up considerably in the first brilliant moments) and cheat.
