The estate was beautiful: smaller and less cultivated than her father's, but with an understated grace and the potential to bring their dreams to fruition through patient, shared work. Already Eleanor loved the park's meandering paths and delighted to walk about with their new dog, a belated but welcome gift from Henry. It was a home, in all the ways small and large she had never truly known without some reservation, not for many a year.
And though she loved the views and cherished her role as mistress, it was more wonderful still to know such unbridled love in return.
Title from Chapter 15 of Northanger Abbey: "... and she called herself without scruple the happiest of mortals."
