My attempt at a sonnet, originally written for a theatre class in high school, with later edits.

A bird outside my window in autumn
brings darker dreams of winter to my mind;
All creatures, bound by time, face lives shortened,
They eventually corrupt, die, unwind.
Blackest night of dread fills my quaking soul
As mortality proves itself each day.
Nothing, in this world, can escape death’s hold;
All are condemned to blindly seek their ways.
And yet Spring’s light pierces the gloom of grief,
Life returned, love’s heat melting icy pain;
To destitutes, it brings hope and relief:
A foretaste of what we’ll someday gain.
Heavenly gift to us living on earth
Is the spring bird, returned to its perch.
